Although the mythology part of our game's inspiration didn’t come into full effect until the start of this year of development, it has had some effect on the designs of some of the levels and some things we are going to add going forward. There is not a lot of mythology to go off of as Celtic mythology is the least documented mythology out there we have taken small parts of what is known and adding some of things to the game.
We added the race of people who inhabit this planet as the Tuatha Dé Dannan (TDD) they were a real race of people in this mythology who inherited knowledge from Danu such as magic so it would make sense as to why Aife gains magic when the core shifts, we are adding some references to old mythology methodologies such as statues, shrines and the Ogham alphabet which was the alphabet used at the time when this mythology was believed to be around.
Having the race on planet Danu being the TDD makes sense due to the skills they inherited from Danu, those being magic and metallurgy (the science that studies the physical and chemical behaviours of metallic elements). As Aife is a military scientist who later develops magic, I think it ties into the skills the TDD were taught quite nicely.
The names Aife and Danu that were picked out by us from a list at the start of the development were a coincidence but once we realised that we chose two names linked to the same mythology we thought it only fair that we small nods to the connections in our game so I started looking into the mythology and found many facts that we could try and incorporate into our game.
Danu in mythology is often associated with the River Danube hence her name and the first instances of her being introduced in this game are going to be in our cave/water level and most of the symbols often used to represent her are water related e.g., seagulls, fish, flowing water etc.

Like all mythologies specific origins are hard to determine and there are many different interpretations of gods and goddesses and who they were the god of and what they did e.g., Dionysus, his appearance and what he is the god of changes depending on where you look on the timeline sometimes, he and Zagreus are one and the same and sometimes they are two different people, so that is why most of this is loosely based as there are no solid stories to follow.
